ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – Time continues to run down for what will be a week of excitement in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, from Nov. 11-17 with the BFGoodrich Tires 57th SCORE Baja 1000. Justin Morgan, 34, El Cajon, California, and the SLAM LIFE Racing/Honda motorcycle team are set to start first after their victory in September’s 5th SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing.

After the position draw for most motorcycle, quad and car classes, except for the SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend, and Trophy Truck Spec, which will have qualifying runs to determine their starting positions in the SCORE Baja 1000, 264 teams from Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and America are entered prior to on-site, late registration next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

A total of 275 teams or more are expected at the fourth round of the 2024 SCORE Desert World Championship, featuring athletes from 32 states in the United States, as well as from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, and 18 total countries—Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, India, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, South Africa, Venezuela, and host Mexico.

Morgan, Tyler Lynn, 23, Mona, Utah, Brandon Prieto, Ensenada, Baja California, and Ryan Suratt 27, Corona, Calif. will seek to reclaim the top spot in "The Granddaddy of All Desert Races" for their team, as well as the motorcycle brand with the most victories in SCORE Baja 100 history, Honda, with 32 overall wins in this iconic race.

The finale of four rounds that comprise the 2024 SCORE Desert World Championship will feature a race course of 864.13 miles, with a race course map available for fans to download for free at www.score-international.com. The journey will take place in the northern region of the Baja California peninsula.

The start and finish of the legendary off-road race will be in the tourist heart of Ensenada, along Boulevard Costero, adjacent to the Riviera de Ensenada Cultural Center.

For the Sportsman classes of motorcycles, quads, cars, trucks, and UTVs, the route will be 736.61 miles, with all participants having a time limit of 36 hours to cross the SCORE Baja 1000 finish line in the elapsed-time race.

Motorcycles and Quads will see the green flag waving on Friday, Nov. 15, at 12:15 a.m. PT, while Trucks, Cars and UTVs will follow at 9 a.m. PT.

Overall winners of the race are expected to cross the finish line in 15 hours for 4-Wheel vehicles, while the first motorcycle is anticipated to complete the desert odyssey in approximately 16 hours.

The race route will feature the best terrain in the northern Baja California peninsula, starting just steps from the Pacific Ocean, then crossing to the other side of the peninsula to advance toward the Sea of Cortez at night, surrounded by the natural beauty of this area of Mexico.

THEY WANT TO STAY ON THE THRONE

The overall winners of last year’s BFGoodrich SCORE Baja 1000—Juan Carlos Salvatierra, 43, Santa Cruz, Bolivia (Pro Moto Unlimited), and Bryce Menzies, 37, Las Vegas (SCORE Trophy Truck), are part of the roster for the "November Classic," seeking to triumph once again on Mexican soil.

Salvatierra, the current champion of the Pro Moto Unlimited class, will share time aboard the No. 1x KTM XCF-450 motorcycle from the Chavo Salvatierra Racing team, with Shane Logan, 22, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Callum Norton, 24, Australia, and Corbin McPherson, 23, Hurricane, Utah.

Menzies, a multiple winner of short-course off-road racing, finally clinched the overall win at the SCORE Baja 1000 a year ago in his No. 7 Mason AWD Ford Raptor Menzies Motorsports, alongside Andy McMillin and Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr.

This year, Menzies will have a new ally behind the wheel, Christopher Polvoorde, 24, Hemet, Utah, in a marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division that currently has 35 entries (including eight in SCORE TT Legend for drivers over 50 years old).

DOUBLE OR MORE THEIR NUMBERS

Among 4-wheel vehicles, the class with the most entries is the SCORE Trophy Truck, then the Trophy Truck Spec class with 26. Next is the Pro UTV Open class with 18 entries, Pro UTV FI class with 17, Class 10 with 14 and Pro UTV Stock with 13.

Among motorcycles, the Pro Moto Ironman class leads with a SCORE class record 32 riders, followed by the Pro Moto Unlimited class with 13 entries, then the Sportsman M/C with 12, and the Pro Moto 30 rounding out with 10 teams.

A STEEL RECORD

These athletes will cover the 864.13-mile race course on their bikes riding solo, with riders from the United States, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Netherlands, South Africa, and host country Mexico.

Records show that the variety of motorcycle brands represented in the Pro Moto Ironman class boasts a rich sporting legacy, including Honda, Beta, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Sherco, Triumph, and Yamaha.

Patricio ‘Pato’ Cabrera from Chile, with extensive experience in the Dakar Rally, will now wear the colors of the prestigious Kawasaki brand. ORMHOF CLASS OF 2024-SCORE CONNECTION

Here’s a brief look at the eight ORMHOF inductees and their ties to SCORE…

A 23-time winner on the U.S. rally scene and six-time Global Rallycross champion, Ken Block (rally/influencer-Legacy) garnered millions of followers showcasing his driving talent through his Gymkhana video series.  He was an influential figure in the automotive industry, known for fostering a vibrant car culture community.

Ken Block passed away in 2023 at the age of 55 in a snowmobiling accident near his home in Utah. The FIA retired Ken Block’s #43 in WRC for 2023 in tribute. DC Shoes proclaimed April 3 as 4.3 Ken Block Day.

He raced in the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000 with Alan Ampudia and Jax Redline and the trio finished fourth out of 29 starters in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 1000 horsepower, unlimited custom Trucks. Block’s Hoonigan group produced a popular YouTube video of his adventure in SCORE.

He was also the founder of DC Shoes and Hoonigan.

Jimmy Lewis (Motorcycle) began racing motorcycles at eight years old and reached the top levels of competition in America, and globally. His wins include Class and Stage wins at Dakar, Overall Wins at Dubai Rally, SCORE Baja 1000, and Incas Rally. Jimmy is a 4-Time International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) Gold Medalist, AMA 125cc National Champion, 250cc National Champion, Enduro National Champion, multi-time AMA District 37 125cc and 250cc winner, and the ISDE Jr World Champion.

Lewis won the 1998 SCORE Baja 1000 motorcycle overall as the second rider for Hall of Famer Johnny Campbell.

After retiring from competition, Jimmy remains an absolute motorcycle enthusiast. He has continued a long and highly respected career as a known coach, journalist, product test rider, race and rally promoter, course director, land use advocate, trail ambassador, and dedicated mentor.  Jimmy has purposefully worked to advance American riders to top success globally, coaching and helping them to surpass his impressive record.

Starting his professional rally career in his home country of New Zealand, Rod Millen (Rally) won the New Zealand Rally Championship three years in a row, including the inaugural event in 1975. He continued his winning ways after moving to the United States, becoming a five-time SCCA National Rally champion in the 1980s, including three straight in 1987, 1988, and 1989.

In the 1980s, Millen also began racing the Mickey Thompson Stadium Series events, winning two events in 1988. He joined Team Toyota in 1991 and went on to win twelve main event titles and becoming the only driver in series history to capture three consecutive Grand National Sport Truck titles, 1992, 1993, 1994.

Millen had also set his sights on becoming King of the Mountain, competing in the Pike’s Peak International Hill Club. He started competing at Pike’s Peak in 1981. He won his first crown at Pike’s Peak in 1994, setting a record for the fastest time ever recorded on the all-dirt course, a record that will never be broken, as portions of the course were paved the following year. Millen didn’t mind racing on pavement, returning to Pike’s Peak to run the fastest overall time four years in a row from 1996 to 1999.

In the early 2000s, Millen competed in rally, hill climb, and enduro events, but he raced other disciplines off-road as well, having success in short course behind the wheel of a Pro4, and competing in SCORE Baja races behind the wheel of a SCORE Trophy Truck.

Millen finished third at the SCORE Baja 2000, the marathon version of the traditional SCORE Baja 1000, doubled in length to commemorate the new millennium.  Racing runs in the Millen family -- Rod would compete in SCORE Baja races several times, with sons Rhys and Ryan, and Rod’s younger brother, Steve Millen, also enjoyed a successful racing career.

In 1986, Jon Nelson (Innovator-Legacy) founded Nelson & Nelson Racing Products with his brother Eric, and his father Keith (Pops).  With his family working by his side, Nelson created some of the most iconic vehicles ever to race off-road.

Nelson, who started his career in the late 1970s working for top off-road racer Walker Evans.   In 1982, Larry Minor and Parnelli Jones hired Walker Evans Racing to build them a Class 8 truck. The truck was designed by Walker Evans, Larry Minor, and Randy Anderson, with Jon Nelson as one of the lead fabricators.

After the truck was built, Nelson stayed with the truck and moved from Walker Evans Racing into the role of team manager for the Miller American team. Steve Kelley joined the team as driver in late 1984 and won the first race he entered, the HDRA Frontier 250. He won the opening race of the 1985 season at Parker and went on to win the SCORE Class 8 Championship as well as the Heavy Metal Championship that year.

Hall of Famer Larry Ragland raced a Nelson truck named "Butch" and started his streak of five overall SCORE Baja 1000 wins in 1991, moving up to a Jon Nelson build considered to be one of the first SCORE Trophy Trucks: "Arnold” had a mid-engine connected to a "V" drive, and in the 1990s, with Larry Ragland behind the wheel, the Jon Nelson engineered truck won four SCORE Baja 1000s in five years, setting the fastest overall time ever recorded in an off-road race at the time.

In a career spanning more than a half-century, British-born photojournalist John Rettie (Media Pioneer-Legacy) provided exposure for off-road events, individuals, and manufacturers in North America and around the world.

“Depth of character, exceptional performance, ethical conduct, life-long dedication, and respect amongst the industry -- John Rettie checks each of these boxes with high ranks,” said ORMHOF inductee Chris Collard, “John was one of those modest, behind-the-camera guys. Whether it happened in Kenya, China, Morocco, or Mexico, John’s lens was focused on the action.”

With images and articles published the world over, John’s writing has been translated into multiple languages. His work has appeared in dozens of publications, including the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times, plus major industry periodicals Road & Track, Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Autoweek, and Hot VWs Magazine.

Rettie passed away unexpectedly in June of 2024, just days after learning he would be inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Jimmy Smith (Competition, Industry) has contributed a great deal to the sport of off-road in the past 40 years. He co-founded Ultra Wheel Company in 1984, and the company remains strong to this day, as one of the largest U.S. aftermarket wheel manufacturers. The Fullerton, California based company engineers, designs, produces and distributes wheels internationally. The company’s website credits Jimmy’s “aggressive passion for truck racing” as the core principle behind the company’s success in delivering strong, durable, championship quality wheels.

In 1994 Jimmy organized his industry friends to start a fundraising group, Wheel Friends of Childhelp, supporting the efforts of Childhelp, a non-profit dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. The group raised more than $2.25 million to support the organization’s efforts.

SCORE’s Sal Fish launched the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck class in 1994, and Jimmy Smith took the overall race victory in that year’s SCORE Baja 1000.

"Pistol Pete" Sohren (Desert-Legacy) has left his mark on the off-road industry by being himself. He was loud; very, very loud. And he was relentless. His words were used strategically; he wasn't a bully; he stopped the bullies.  He fought for what he believed in. He loved the sport, speed, and always wanted to see his competitors at the finish line...alive. Pete inspired people of all ages and all walks of life to dream big, and to always 'go for it'.

"He made dreams come true," said Pete's daughter Paige, "I am absolutely confident that he gave the sport more than it ever gave him. It gave him hell and he gave it back; maybe it's a tie."

Pistol Pete was certainly an innovator, and he had a little P.T. Barnum-style hustle in him.  His Geiser Brothers trucks had three-seats, built with the driver seat in the center, with the GPS navigator on the right and the gauge reader on the other. His idea was to provide the driver with better visibility on both sides. It also allowed the navigator to stay more focused on the course, and the gauge reader more focused on the truck's performance. The biggest bonus of the three-seat orientation was that two people could hop out for tire changes

He raced in many different SCORE classes before he died in a non-racing accident in 2019, with several class wins and podium finishes, including winning Class 7 in the 2014 SCORE Baja 1000 peninsula run.

Son of the original Weatherman of SCORE desert-racing fame, ORMHOF inductee Bob Steinberger, Scott Steinberger (Industry) has been a part of the off-road racing family since an early age.

Bob Steinberger founded PCI Race Radios in 1972. The weatherman nickname came about in 1974, when Bob was putting communications in race vehicles for Bill Stroppe, Joe MacPherson, and Walker Evans – all three now Hall of Fame inductees.

To make a makeshift antenna, Bob sent up three weather balloons with five hundred feet of coax attached, and the first successful radio relay from an off-road race pit was made.  The story goes that it was Joe MacPherson who couldn’t remember Bob’s name, so he dubbed him “Weatherman” on the radio.

Bob provided often lifesaving radio relay communications from high atop El Diablo mountain during SCORE races for over 30 years.  When Bob became ill with cancer in 2016, Scott stepped into the role of Weatherman for his father, who passed away in 2017.  Scott continues to fulfill the Weatherman legacy in Baja and at other off-road races, in memory of his father.

While Scott had success as a SCORE racer in several classes and successful businessman with the family business, PCI Race Radios, it is his work to continue the Weatherman legacy that will also be his legacy. Among his SCORE race wins were five in the SCORE Baja 1000 in three different classes.

LOUIS UNSER ‘NEVER GIVE UP’ AWARD

The Louis Unser ‘Never Give Up’ Award, presented by Riviera Racing, is given each year to an individual who demonstrates a pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity. Louis Unser relentlessly fought through health issues to persevere in his passion for engine building. Like Louis, Lobsam Yee has exemplified a 'Never Give Up' attitude in life and his desert racing career.

Yee, 47, Tijuana, Mexico, was injured twelve years ago while out testing a race truck. As a result of the accident, he lost his right hand and suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

Before the injury, Yee raced the SCORE series for 17 years without missing a race, winning at least one race each season.  Through determination and perseverance, Yee has been able to return to desert racing, participating in four NORRA events, and winning the 2024 SCORE San Felipe 250 and 2024 SCORE Baja 400 in Class 10.

ORMHOF

The Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame was established in 1978 to recognize and honor those individuals and organizations whose lifelong contributions to off-road motorsports have set a standard for others to follow. In 1995, the late legendary off-road racer Rod Hall became ORMHOF chairman, a position he held for more than twenty years, before selecting current chairman Mark McMillin as his successor.

The mission of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame is to educate and inspire present and future generations of the off-road community by celebrating the achievements of those who came before.

ORMHOF maintains a collection of vintage off-road vehicles that are displayed at museums around the country, as well as an extensive online archive of print, images, and videos, with more content added as funds become available.

PREMIO LOUIS UNSER, “NUNCA TE RINDAS”
